Mount Prospect police said officers responded to a home in the 500 block of North Elm Street at approximately 1:09 p.m. after receiving a 911 call concerning an unresponsive 5-month-old child.

According to reporting by the Daily Herald and FOX 32 Chicago, the infant was taken to Northwest Community Hospital and was pronounced dead there. FOX 32 reported that the medical examiner determined the cause of death was asphyxia caused by an unsafe sleep environment.

At the time of the death, authorities did not immediately announce a criminal charge against the baby’s father.Death & Tragedy

Instead, detectives continued an investigation.

That investigation lasted for months.

The eventual arrest in August 2026 was therefore not the beginning of the case. It was the result of a lengthy investigation into an infant death that had occurred eight months earlier.
Why Did the Arrest Come Months Later?

Delayed arrests in serious cases can be difficult for the public to understand.

People sometimes assume that if police do not make an arrest immediately, investigators must not know what happened.
