Maybe you’ve wondered whether it means you’re exceptionally healthy.
Or perhaps you’ve seen a dramatic social-media post claiming that prominent veins are proof of dehydration, low body fat, high blood pressure, or another medical condition.
The truth is considerably more nuanced.
**Visible veins are extremely common, and by themselves they usually don’t tell you that something is wrong.** Vein visibility can be influenced by genetics, body composition, age, temperature, physical activity, hydration, and even the position of your body.
In some situations, however, newly prominent or unusual veins can accompany a medical problem.
The important thing is knowing the difference.
## Why Can Veins Become Visible?
Veins carry blood back toward the heart. Some veins are located relatively close to the surface of the skin, making them naturally easier to see.Explore Anatomy Models
How noticeable they appear depends partly on how much tissue lies between the vein and the surface of the skin.
Someone with relatively little subcutaneous fat may naturally have more visible veins.
Someone with thicker skin or more tissue covering superficial veins may have very little visible vascularity.
Neither situation automatically indicates better or worse health.
