A 60-year-old farmer, identified only as Zhang, had a frightening experience after being bitten by a pit viper known locally as the “five-step snake.”
The snake bit Zhang on his index finger. The snake is called the “five-step snake” because of a local belief that its venom is so fatal that a person will lose his life after taking only five steps following a bite.
Zhang had recently seen a neighbor die after being bitten by a snake. Because of that experience and the local belief about the snake’s venom, he became extremely worried that he could suffer the same fate.
